Handy DIY Solutions for Your Home

1.DIY Home Air-Freshener

essential oils

For this DIY concoction you will need:

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol or vodka
  • 20-30 drops of essential oils (choose your favourite fragrance, or a mix of fragrances!)

Method:

Mix these bad boys into a spray bottle and you’re ready to go!

Why it works? Distilled water is the best option for this because it’s the cleanest type of water. Your other option is to use tap water that’s been boiled for an hour (so the chlorine evaporates. The alcohol is needed tas a kind of stabiliser. It helps the water and essential oils mix better. Have you ever watched water and oils mixed together? They just separate without the alcohol.

2.DIY Mattress, Upholstery, and Carpet Cleaning Solution

2.1. Dry solution: for this cleaning solution you will need:

  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • ½ cup of corn starch
  • 10-15 drops of essential oils

Method:

Using just enough water to make a paste, combine the two dry compounds. Add your selected essential oils and spread onto your carpet, mattress, or upholstery that you want to clean. Leave for about 30 minutes. Using a vacuum suck up the mixture.

Why does this work? The two dry compounds work their way into the fibres and absorb any dirt and oils that have lodged themselves into our furniture. When you vacuum these up, you vacuum all the dirt, oils, and odours with them.

2.2. The not-so-dry solution: you will need:

  • hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tbsp. of dish soap
  • Soft upholstery brush

Method: Mix them into a spray bottle. Spray the area of your carpet, mattress, or upholstery that you need to clean. Leave to sit for 5 minutes and use an upholstery brush if needed to lift dirt. Have dry towels or a cloth ready to soak up excess water.

Why does this work? The hydrogen peroxide works as a fabric brightener. We advise you not to use it on darker furniture. The dish soap helps break away the dirt and grime from your furniture.

3.DIY Wood Polish (and cleaner!)

You will need:

  • ½ cup of white vinegar
  • ¼ cup of olive oil
  • 1 tbsp. of lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp. of vegetable glycerine (optional)
  • 20-30 drops of essential oils

Method:

Mix ingredients into a spray bottle. Mix well before every use. Get your microfibre cloth ready and start spraying that wood furniture! You could make larger doses of it with the same fractions and make it for wood floors as well.

Why does this work? The white vinegar is a powerful disinfectant, as is the lemon juice. The lemon juice, olive oil, and vegetable glycerine work together to bring out the shine in your wood furniture and floors.

4.DIY Bathroom and Kitchen Disinfectant

You will need:

  • Baking soda (soda bicarb)
  • White vinegar
  • Juice from half a lemon

Method:

Mix equal parts white vinegar and baking soda into a spray bottle (as much as you think you’ll need). Add the lemon juice. Get a clean cloth and your spray and you’re ready to take on that bacteria!

Why does it work? White vinegar and lemon juice are one of the best household natural disinfectants. Both have highly acidic properties and kill bad bacteria. The baking soda helps reinforce the disinfectant properties in the two. It also works as a natural odour-killer.

5.DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of white vinegar
  • Juice from half a lemon
